April 2016 Shangpa Rinpoche Retreat Program
Thursday and Friday, April 7-8th: Teaching on the Four Foundations
The Four Foundations are a set of powerful practices for the Vajrayana practitioner to build a solid ground for the gaining of enlightenment. It comprises the following:
  1. Four Common Foundations that are reflections shared by all Buddhist traditions; and
  2. Four Uncommon Foundations that are Vajrayana methods to quickly establish the mind for total reliance on the Triple Gems and Triple Roots including refuge, cultivating the Bodhicitta mind, purifying eons of bad karma, defilements and obscurations, gaining merit and building unswerving trust in the guru.
Saturday, April 9th: Manjushri Initiation, Instruction and Practice
As one of the eight great Bodhisattvas who were the closest disciples of the Buddha, Manjushri is the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom aspect of all the Buddhas. The Sanskrit name Manjushri has the complete Sanskrit name of Manjushrikumarabhuta and can be translated as “Gentle Glory.”
In order to benefit sentient beings, Manjushri manifests in many different forms. Typically, he is depicted with a sword in his right hand (symbolizing cutting off the root of delusion which is the cause of suffering, ignorance and self-grasping) and a scriptural text in his left (entitled “Perfection of Wisdom” which cuts off all delusions).
Manjushri is typically invoked to increase intelligence by reciting his mantra: “Om Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhih”
Sunday April 10: Consecration Ceremony and Mahakala
Special Event traditional Tibetan Buddhist program to consecrate the Manjushree Shrine Room and Facilities and celebrate the plans  underway to nurture Buddhist study and practice under the leadership and vision of Shangpa Rinpoche
Friday and Saturday, April 29-30th: Shamatha, Vipassana & Introduction to Mahamudra
Shangpa Rinpoche will be explaining the techniques of Shamatha, calm abiding meditation. The practice of Shamatha meditation is an essential and important practice for one who seeks realization on the true nature of mind.

The attainment of meditative concentration through the practice of Shamatha meditation forms a vital basis for one to progress to Vipassana or insight meditation. The development of transcendental wisdom and ultimate realization of the mind nature through the perfection of insight meditation liberates us from inner delusions and resulting sufferings.

Shangpa Rinpoche will base his teachings and practical guided instructions on the Mahamudra approach to developing Shamatha and Vipassana meditation upon the text Ngedon Gyamtso or Ocean of Certainty by the 9th Karmapa Wangchug Dorje.
